Basketball ACT has snared former Canberra Cavalry boss Tony Fraser as the sport's new chief executive and officials believe he can lift basketball to a new level of professionalism.Fraser will replace current Basketball ACT chief executive Tony Jackson next month.Jackson will finish his tenure on April 18, after the Australian under-18 championships in Canberra.Fraser has experience in sport, commercial property, pharmaceuticals and education and has worked with the government.Fraser was also the Cavalry's general manager in the inaugural Australian Baseball League season, was a business development manager for the NRL, chief executive of the Tasmanian Cricket Association and general manager for ACT AFL and Netball NSW.Fraser's appointment was ticked off at a Basketball ACT board meeting on Tuesday night.There were more than 50 applicants for the position when Jackson announced he was quitting the role.The list was cut to 12 before Fraser was plucked from a six-person short list.Basketball ACT's negotiations with the University of Canberra and the planned takeover of WNBL team the Canberra Capitals were also on the agenda at the board meeting, with the sport waiting for a formal proposal from the university.
