One of Missouri’s most curious creatures that dominates its lakes and streams is one that is fun to watch.The river otter is a playful cousin to mink, weasels and skunks. With snow falling, the conditions were perfect to look for signs of river otters. (Like their relatives, they use their scent glands to mark their territory and scare off intruders.) Last week after the overnight temperatures got to near zero for a couple of nights, the area streams froze partially over. It’s not unusual to see a mother otter with her cubs, but families aside, it depends on the species. Habitat Otters in Missouri are found in streams, ponds and wetland habitat such as oxbows, old river channels, sloughs and borrow ditches. These slides are pretty obvious and have been used in the past to inventory streams for otter sign from fixed wing aircraft.In 1980, it was determined that there were only about 35-70 or so otters remaining in the state in some of the swamps and wetlands of the boot-heel. A century ago, otters were nearly eliminated in Missouri because of unregulated harvest.
