'Enjoy' is maybe not the word for this given the nature of the content but this book is well written and hard hitting without being overdramatic - a very effective presentation of the reality and futility of war from the perspective of the foot soldier. But soon he and his mates realize that ideals of nationalism and patriotism are empty platitudes rather than thinking that war is glorious and honorable. It's not all doom and gloom, I thought i wouldn't be able to handle it but it really was an excellent read. You read it at one level, but often there is a more subtle message behind the words. Clever writing as it switches perspectives and moods. It is easy to see that the story and experiences of Bauer apply to those on the opposite side of the trenches. Remarque has a very easy style of writing, yet manages to put very deep thoughts into the text for everyone to understand. He also described the horrific injuries and really limited treatment. Truly sad story. Paul hates and resents his situation but he copes, he copes with having to kill people, he copes seeing his friends die and in doing so he begins to change in himself.
