She's tough but vulnerable, embellished with faults, stoic, just keeps trudging through life and her job the only way that she knows how--with dogged determination. Other seasons are available on Acorn and I have thoroughly enjoyed them. However it is Danny's little boy, the profoundly deaf Toby, who gives Vera the means to solve the case. 04. I think Vera holds her own admirably.
This series demonstrates the humanity of the officers and all those involved in the crime, rather than a cut and dried whodunnit.
Also of note is the beautiful and evocative Northumberland landscape, which features prominently in each episode. It's quite an amazing thing to witness albeit fictionalized, it resonates with authority.

I don't know what it is about British crime dramas and police procedurals, but they always beat their American counterparts hands down. Vera investigates the death of an unidentified man dredged up from a slurry pit on a remote Northumberland farm.
I really love Vera, it has been an awesome series and I am currently watching season 3-Vera goes from strength to strength in each series. Episode Ep. Vera and her team investigate a 30-year-old mystery when the remains of a girl who went missing in 1984 are discovered half-buried in the Northumberland woods. Vera insists on the respect.
With Brenda Blethyn, Kenny Doughty, Jon Morrison, Cush Jumbo. The stories are intense and the acting amazing. Americans are still pimply-faced adolescents compared to the British-- and it shows in the level of acting, writing, and the humanity of the characters portrayed on screen.
