The love story between Clift's character, the TVA representative and local girl Carol Garth (Lee Remick)is as important to the story as the TVA's struggle to evict the inhabitants of one island. It's an expansive work, distinguished by exceptional location photography, but, as ever, (Kazan's) focus is on complex interpersonal relationships. In studying a slice of national socio-economic progress in terms of people, it catches something timeless and essential in the human spirit and shapes it in the American image.

A food writer pregnant with her second baby finds out her husband is having an affair. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi I tend to disagree with other reviewers in regards to the subplot between Monty Clift and Lee Remick; I feel their scene slow things down and I find myself fast-forwarding past them to get to the match of will between Clift and Van Fleet.

A light-skinned black woman falls in love with a white doctor, though he is unaware of her true race. "The River Wild" is one of the movies you want to play along with, you really do, but it gets so many details subtly wrong that finally you lose patience and turn on it. Her prophecy turns out to be true, as Van Fleet becomes yet another sacrifice to progress. After a day's rafting, they make camp for the night, but Tom continues working on his The Hartmans are forced down the river at gunpoint before setting up camp for the night.
