Peter Straughan (screenplay by), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a thoughtful take on complex spy narrative. Tomas Alfredson directs this adaptation of John Le Carre's thrilling Cold War-era spy novel that casts Gary Oldman as a retired secret agent who is pulled back into the game to ferret out a Soviet agent in MI6. This second adaptation was released thirty-two years after the renowned television series Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979), just under thirty years after its sequel Smiley's People (1982), and thirty-seven years after the novel was published.
I remember the paranoia of living through the cold war at that time. Filled with political intrigue if you are willing to follow along. Complex character portrayal is presented in a slow deep style that only inspires you to know more about the person. Difficult to single out any one performance as all were amazing but I particularly admired Gary Oldman, Mark Strong and Tom Hardy for their work. They really capture the spirit of the cold war era. After the fray is over, Smiley discovers that the logbook pages for the night of the cable have been cut out, supporting Tarr's story. Never have I seen such a compilation of such fabulous performances together. From the perspective of someone familiar with the book and original television series it turned out to be a superficial but nevertheless entertaining skim over the source material.
