Eight costumed boys running to meet their friend Pipkin at the haunted house outside town encounter instead the huge and cadaverous Mr. Moundshroud. Coming from someone who sadly hasn’t had the pleasure of having trick or treaters haunting my doorstep for several years now, I find this story refreshing and nostalgic. In addition, he wrote several books for children, including Switch on the Night….

(One caveat, though: Bradbury unfortunately perpetuates a couple of misconceptions about Having never read a Ray Bradbury book before I had no idea what to expect, however I was not quite expecting this.

I have always remembered the animated film for the simple reason that it delves deep into the meaning of Halloween (which other halloween films dont seem to, choosing to put more emphasis into fright and mysticism of the holiday) and how it has been celebrated across many continents in different ways. This is a superb book for adults to read to children, a way to teach them, quite painlessly, about customs and imagery related to Halloween from ancient Egypt, Mediterranean cultures, Celtic Druidism, Mexico, and even a cathedral in Paris.

It is quite short and I read it in a couple of sittings.
