Long day, amazing memories, and beautiful scenery. I’m planning an trip sometime this summer and would prefer to go as early as possible to avoid the crowds and your pictures look like the perfect time of year to go with still a little bit of snow on the mountains but none down in the basin. It took Bailey and I just under 2 hours to reach the viewpoint and then another 30 minutes to the summit. Just wondering about the bouldering at the end, whether or not he can make it up. Bridger Lake Campground is located next to its namesake on the northern slope of the Uinta Mountains at an elevation of 9,400 feet. Rocks will get very slippery in precipitation. Including our lunch break and several breaks during the hike to catch our breath and take photos it took us 7 hours. For those not in a hurry, allowing 3 to 4 hours is more than enough time to get to the summit. Careful of the moose though, as some of our teammates were running along the trail and startled a mama and her calf.I know this is a bit late and most of your readers seem to be seasoned hikers,but almost all of the lakes and streams in UT have giardia. The trail is easy enough to do overnight but I recommend taking an extra day to explore the area around Dead Horse Lake. Turn left and drive to Forest Road 077. Backpacking in gives you the time to enjoy the beautiful basin, explore other lakes and spend time on the peak to soak it all in. The views from the top are breathtaking, looking directly at the north face of Elkhorn and Colonel Foster.
I went on a really clear day, and you could see for miles in any direction. If you are new to 14ers, it is a very good idea to start with some of the less difficult summits: Grays Peak, Torreys Peak, Mount Bierstadt, Mount Sherman, Quandary Peak , and Handies Peak are all much better mountains to serve as a first 14er. When is the best time to hike Roys Peak? I’m wondering if there are good spots to filter once you are past Gunsight? Moon Lake Group Campground is located on the shores of scenic Moon Lake on the southern slope of the Uinta Mountains. Most guesthouses will be happy to arrange for you, of course for a small commission. Chances are you’ll be fine around Dollar Lake for camping. We got to the trailhead before sunset, and I was back in Provo by 11 pm. If you're successful, you'll be rewarded with 360-degrees of breathtaking views. Any thoughts on whether that would be helpful for hauling gear, or would they just get in the way?I’ve seen people use horses and llamas to transport gear up there, so if you think goats would work then I don’t see why not!How much drinking water do you recommend carrying on this hike?I don’t carry much. You might run into a few snow patches here and there but if I were you, I wouldn’t be worried about too much snow.Still, it wouldn’t hurt to call ahead to Ashley National Forest and see what they know.I will be hiking Kings peak next week. There is a forest ranger that hangs around the camping areas near King’s Peak, so be on your best behavior.My dog is 6 months old (46 lbs. With all the snow we’ve gotten I know we’ll be dealing with snow towards the summit.It will be throwing the dice for sure.
