David draws a picture of Bill Malloy's ghost, much to Roger's disgust. Joe tells Carolyn that he saw Victoria at Burke's hotel room. Roger is terrified to learn that Victoria has found the fountain pen. He introduces himself as Strake tells Burke about Mrs. Stoddard, who still runs the family's fishing business, but hasn't left her home in eighteen years. Bill wants to help clear Burke of his manslaughter conviction if he will leave Elizabeth, David, and Carolyn alone. Carolyn shows up in Bangor and joins Burke for lunch.Roger worries about what Sam may have told Bill Malloy. The sheriff goes to Collinwood to question Roger.
Carolyn and Joe talk about Bill's death. Victoria arrives at Collinwood and knocks on the door. Roger is suspicious about Victoria's disappearance and decides to investigate the closed-off wing of the house. Roger is delighted to learn of the coroner's verdict, and that he is no longer a murder suspect. Sam is relieved that Bill's death has been ruled an accident.

Elizabeth offers Victoria the key to the locked room in the basement but she doesn't take it. Matthew threatens Burke at the diner. Trying to forget her recent ordeal, Victoria plans a trip to Bangor.
Joe learns the truth about Carolyn and Burke's relationship and the two men come to blows. Carolyn tells Victoria about the pen that Burke gave her and how Roger lost it the night Bill died. David plants the bleeder valve in Burke's hotel room. The sheriff orders that Burke is to stay away from Collinwood.Roger is anxious to learn about Victoria's evening with Sam and Maggie. David continues to help Matthew hide out. Burke, Carolyn, and Joe go back to Collinwood, they all discover Victoria's suitcase is still in the house.
Carolyn tells Burke that the coroner has found Bill's death an accident.Elizabeth is given the coroner's verdict on Bill's death, which rules that he was a victim of accidental drowning. David threatens Victoria. John Harris (Elizabeth's Banker) realizes that James Blair was interested in purchasing the Collins debts. Frank Garner vows to help Victoria uncover any hidden information about her past. Bill interrogates Burke about Strake. The sheriff also questions Carolyn who is very disturbed at the accusations that Roger may have killed Bill Malloy.Burke tells the sheriff about Victoria nearly getting killed. David asks the sheriff a lot of questions, including what would happen to someone who helped Matthew.As the search continues, Burke and Roger exchange threats. The sheriff finds Roger and Victoria and helps them get home.
Roger gives the ring to Carolyn and tries to stop her (unsuccessfully) from meeting with Burke. Burke steps up his plans to undermine the Collins business interests. Meanwhile, Sam is alarmed to hear that Bill Malloy's ghost has been seen by Victoria.
